Founder

Alan J. Edwards founded Whitehorse Technology Solutions in 2004 with the core mission of providing exceptional, reliable and affordable IT support to small to medium businesses in the D.C. area. Alan started Whitehorse Technology Solutions because he believes that all companies should have access to a high level of professional support even if they are not a large account.

Alan has 15 years of IT management and support experience with a focus on integrated systems, hardware, networks, data security and disaster recovery. Prior to Whitehorse, Alan ran all of the IT systems for a large national mortgage finance company and was a Senior Systems Engineer for Tivoli systems focusing on small business networks. Alan also headed Technical Operations for Brother International in East Africa and provided IT support for the United Nations in Rwanda and Croatia-- under less than ideal conditions--in the mid 1990s. He has also worked for a small startup company writing voice applications for mobile devices.

Alan has an undergraduate degree in Physics and a Master's Degree in Teaching from University of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. He was born in Oxford, England and spent two years as a volunteer teacher for physics and chemistry in Nairobi, Kenya. Alan now lives in Falls Church, Virginia.

Our Name

The Whitehorse referred to in the company name is the Uffington White Horse in England. This is a highly stylized hill figure, 374 feet (110 m) long, cut out of the turf to expose the white chalk stone on the upper slopes of Uffington Castle, a large Iron Age hill fort in the area where our founder grew up.

The figure has been shown to date back some 3,000 years, to the Bronze Age, based on optically stimulated luminescence dating carried out following archaeological investigations in 1994. These studies produced three dates ranging between 1400 and 600 BC. Iron Age coins have been found that bear a representation of the Uffington White Horse re-enforcing the early dating of this artifact, thus further discounting alternative theories that the figure was created in the Early Middle Ages. Many images of this can be found through this Google link.

Case Studies

Case 1 Whitehorse Technology Solutions received a call from a small business early one Sunday morning. They were having problems generating a critical proposal with a midnight deadline because the computer that contained the needed information would not boot up properly. Within two hours an engineer was at their site with tools, diagnostics and even a fully loaded spare PC. The problem was with the hardware and it was fixed within 15 minutes. Because this was such a small problem – there was no charge, we were just pleased to be able to help the company meet its deadline. They have become a regular client since that day.

Case 2 An existing client was starting a new venture, had incorporated and were set on their course of action. When they discussed the company with Whitehorse Technology Solutions we enquired as to whether they had chosen a domain name. After an intensive investigation, we found that all domain names related to the company name or business processes were already taken. However, we also discovered that the ideal domain, although registered was not in use. So using personal contact rather than a formal domain broker we managed to negotiate a simple trade with a local vendor rather than the normal large cash payment.

Case 3 A large organization was having random network outages. By logging exactly when the issue was occurring we noticed that the network problems coincided with rainy days. However, there was no apparent way that water was affecting the network directly. After some investigation, we determined that that when it rained, the office got darker, and staff turned on their office lights. We found that the network cables were routed through the ceiling space along each fluorescent light fixture and the induction from these lights into the network cable was causing the cable to drop network packets and be unreliable during rain storms. We were able to resolve this issue for the company and ensure that the network was more stable in the future.

Case 4 An existing client had a severe problem with their main email server on a Saturday evening. Whitehorse Technology Solutions was alerted to the problem by system monitoring put in place months before to track such problems. Their older server did not have a good warrantee in place and we knew that parts would take time to obtain. To resolve this issue, we gave our client a temporary server, loaded with their data and configured for their needs while we worked to repair their server. On Monday morning they arrived in the office and could work without any lost productivity.
