Network support technician work in several areas and often under stressful conditions. Usually, network support technician work under the direction of network administrators to helps manage local area networks as well as wide area networks. A LAN is a group of computers, printers or other hardware that is connected in a small area--like an office--and a WAN is a network of computers connected over large distances through the internet or a private connection. It is the responsibility of the network support technician to ensure the sustainability and working of both of these networks.

The tasks of network support technician are very varied. The work that they perform depend on the skill sets that they posses as well as the work required by the corporate organization to maintain the system.

In almost every corporate organization, the network technician will help install, setup, test, maintain, and troubleshoot LANs and WANs. The network technician may also be required occasionally to make computer housecall. The network technician is responsible for routine tasks like adding new accounts, assigning passwords, and keeping logs of failed login attempts, the number and size of print jobs, and other network information.
